A Separate Piece A Separate Piece (2006)

Submitted for an "Artists' Corner" exhibit at a National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation (NOAH) conference, this drawing was intended as an allegory for many attendees' personal experiences.

Red Leviathan Leviathan (2003)

The impetus for this analog-digital hybrid was a request from my Australian cousin to create a Leviathan-esque cover image for his death-metal band's CD.

Black Horse Tribute Black Horse Tribute (2002)

This drawing, which is based on a photograph, was inspired by all the great black horses in literature, from Black Beauty to The Black Stallion to those spooky-cool horses ridden by the Ring Wraiths in Lord of the Rings.

Portrait of a Stranger Portrait of a Stranger (1988)

This drawing isn't based on anybody I know or any photograph I've seen...just some random guy in my head during my teens who I tried to bring to life on paper. Nearly all the drawings I've ever done have been of animals; I wanted to see what would happen if I attempted a human being for a change. While this piece certainly isn't museum-bound, it didn't come out as disastrously as I feared it might either.

Exxon Tiger Exxon Tiger (1986)

If Exxon did one thing right, it was choosing the tiger as its mascot. Tigers are my favorite members of the big cat family, and when I was a kid, I loved Exxon ads for that reason. This drawing is based on one such ad featuring a photograph of a tiger. (The MGM lion is a close runner-up as cool mascots go, though...maybe I'll give that one a shot at some point as well.)

Alsatian Alsatian (1986)

In England, German Shepherds are called Alsatians, a name derived from the former German province of Alsace which is now a region in France. My father grew up with a giant German Shepherd named Mac, of whom I've heard many tales. (That may be part of why this breed is one of my favorites.) Unfortunately, there were no pictures of Mac that were big enough to use as a model, so this drawing is based on a photograph in a dog book.
